2023 – Now that’s a tourn-of-events!

From a sparring with great structure to a match with an impeccable (accidental) disarm, the last two weekends have been wild!

The Omaha Kunst Des Fechtens(KDF) hosted 2 different events for those who were abandoned by the Cornhusker State Games. The first event was hosted at Nate’s Stumble Inn in Bennington, NE and was focused on Shortsword and Rapier. The second event was held at the Benson Town Hall and focused on Messer and Longsword.

The first event was on June 17th, and we had 3 of our members participate. Joe Loder, Nick Royal, and Jordon Scribner competed in both events of the day, and fought admirably in the preliminary round robin fights, with the goal of making it into the finals bracket.

Though they fought hard, only Joe Loder was able to make it to the top 8, and into the finals bracket. There he fought stiff competition, but didn’t make it past the quarterfinals. Regardless, our team had fun, and couldn’t wait for the next weekend.

The second event was on June 24th, in which we had Nick, and Jordan return to fight, but we also had Morgan Otte competing, one of our newest members to the guild. All three members participated in both the Messer and Longsword events. This combination of participants lead to an epic example of the power of structure by Nick, when in a match, was pushed across the rink without losing his defense, balance, or even footing.

This event, sadly, ended up being similar to the week before, with only one of our members making it to the finals bracket. Though only Jordan made it, we are SUPER proud of the display that Nick and Morgan put forth. Participants and Judges alike commented on their form and technique, and you could see in their faces, and responses, that they were excited to meet all three of our members in the next tournament.

From the first swing of the Shortsword competition to the last thrust of the Longsword tournament, we were excited to see both our members, and members from other guilds perform at their best. We cheered on the underdogs, and celebrated with the winners, and had fun doing it. We are excited for the next Omaha KDF Event in September, and hope that we see both our friends from other guilds, and new people, but also the improvements they have been able to do in the short 3-ish month break.

We are very grateful to Tyler Sigmon of Omaha KDF, who stepped up and gave us the tournaments that the Cornhusker State Games bailed on.
